Working from home and homeschooling is the new normal for millions of parents who are trying to cope with keeping their jobs going and stepping into the teacher role for the kids while sheltering in place.

Watch the video below for my tips and reflections on how to cope with parenting through coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. – Markette Sheppard

Here are 9 survival tips for parenting through COVID-19:

  1. Become an Early Riser
Get up early (like 4 a.m.) in order to get ahead of e-mails and work projects.
  2. Get the Wiggles Out
When your kids wake up, start the day with a morning walk, jog or bike ride to help them get the wiggles out. Practice social distancing when you see other people on your outing.
  3. Fill the Day with Play
Make free time, play time and movie time during the day while you work.
  4. Go to Night School
Home school in the evenings after you stop working and teach on weekends when you have less work demands on your time.
  5. Take an Online Class
Look for online educational tools to help your kids learn, like ABCYA.com and IXL.com. For older students, enroll in a Masterclass.
  6. Live Stream the Learning
Ask your child’s school if teachers can live stream daily lessons so you can stay connected to the school community. If teachers aren’t available, maybe your friend group would be up for teaching lessons on Facebook Live or in group video chats for one hour a day.
  7. Adjust Bedtime Hours
Allow your kids to stay up a little later, so they can sleep in later and allow you to have more time to focus on non-parenting things that need your attention.
  8. Make Clean Part of the Routine
Incorporate your kids into the household chores. There’s a lesson in learning that everyone needs to contribute to a clean and germ-free household.
  9. Customize Your Routine
Use the homeschooling schedule below as a guide, but customize it to fit your work schedule and household needs.
