Ain’t Nobody like The Queen of Funk and this month, she’s rocking out at Kukuza Fest, a free virtual music festival presented by WEE Nation Radio and hosted by Glow Stream TV founder Markette Sheppard.
Featured entertainers include 10-time Grammy award winner Chaka Khan (a.k.a. The Queen of Funk), Grammy Hall of Famers Billy Davis, Jr. and Marilyn McCoo of 5th Dimension, NAACP Image Award-winner Erika Alexander and many other notable names in R&B, hip hop, jazz and children’s music, according to this statement.
Kukuza Fest will also feature some of the most culturally impactful and critically acclaimed children’s music entertainers of our time, including Latin Grammy winner 123 Andres and the Grammy nominated Alphabet Rockers.
Hosted by Emmy winner and bestselling children’s book author Markette Sheppard on Sunday, Sept. 20, Durham, NC Council Member and musician Pierce Freelon kicks off the monumental music event on Saturday, Sept 19.
Named after the Swahili word for “amplify,” the Kukuza Fest will provide a fun and culturally relevant outlet for families while celebrating African-American artists in the family music industry.
“There is an area of opportunity for more diversity in culturally relevant music for kids. We are elevating and amplifying traditionally marginalized Black voices, and ensuring the family music community is diverse and inclusive for all,” said Walker. “We need community control of the music our children listen to and through WEE Nation Radio we are taking back control. We provide child-appropriate and self-affirming music that will enhance children’s social and cultural development,” the WEE Nation Radio founder.
Kukuza Fest is a free two-day virtual streaming concert event taking place on September 19-20 from 3-5pm. It was created by WEE Nation founder Devin Walker and organized by Family Music Forward, a grassroots collective of creators dedicated to dismantling racial bias within the music industry. Kukuza Fest will stream directly on the WEE Nation Radio Facebook page.
