When it comes to most presidential candidates, they are historically not like us. But Vice President Kamala Harris is different. Poised to make a bevy of historical firsts if she secures the win for president, Harris will become a leader who has lived experiences like many of the people she will serve.
Here’s how her middle-class roots, working at fast-food restaurants and the like, makes VP Harris just like us everyday folk…
1. Kamala Harris worked at McDonald’s
“She worked the register and manned the fry and ice cream machines,” said an official from the Harris presidential campaign to the Daily Beast, echoing a statement that Harris has earlier made. More than 41 million people in America have worked at McDonalds, which is 1 in 8 workers in the US, according to a survey conducted by the fast-food giant. This includes some who went on to become astronauts, teachers, lawyers and, perhaps soon, the president of the United States.
2. Kamala Harris Straightens Her Own Hair
In an interview on Keke Palmer’s podcast, the issue that all Black women kiki about inevitably came up—their hair! That’s when Harris shared that she uses a round brush to straighten her locks. “I don’t use a curling iron. It’s too much heat,” the vice president told the actress. The clip went viral on TikTok and YouTube with more than a quarter of a million views on each platform, proving that the power of a silky smooth press should not be understated.
Now, whether the veep straightens her hair for political reasons is unknown, but a recent HR Dive survey found that 66 percent of Black women alter their hairstyle for a job interview. Can you envision the first woman American President rocking her natural curls?
3. Kamala Harris Got Game When It Comes to Comfort Food
Who made the potato salad? It’s a common question at cookouts across America, along with inquiries about the bread pudding, mac & cheese, greens and other soul food favorites. But, the presidential frontrunner wants America to know that she’s got game when it comes to comfort food for the soul. When asked by a female voter about how she makes her greens, Harris shared that she uses “bacon” and “hot sauce” among other ingredients to put her foot in it, as the saying goes.
“I see why you get invited [to the cookout] ever year,” the woman replied in a nod of approval.
