Court was officially in session as She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premiered on Disney+ on Thursday, and right out the gate it gave me comedic vibes. The half-hour legal sitcom is Marvel Cinematic Universes’ first attempt at a TV comedy. It is spearheaded by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Kat Coiro, who also serves as executive producer of the series.
Jennifer Walters is a seven-foot-tall green superhero and a modern-day career woman. By breaking the infamous fourth wall, lead actress Tatiana Maslany shows us (the audience) just how self-aware her character is. Although Jennifer’s cousin Dr. Bruce Banner aka “Smart Hulk” (Mark Ruffalo), appears in the series, she’s not portrayed as the Hulk’s female version or sidekick. Smart Hulk shows Jennifer the ropes of being a Hulk. Her character is more complex than her male counterpart because she isn’t triggered by anger. She’s more self-aware and has more self-control, whether in human or superhero form. Her conflicts aren’t as surface level as her cousin Bruce’s, and Jen seems to have more innate strength than Smart Hulk.
With a female director and head writer, this series is giving me all of the Glow Girl vibes I need, so the verdict is this show is worth watching. Other female characters playing alongside Tatiana Maslany include Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, and Renée Elise Goldsberry. In fact, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is rumored to have a myriad of MCU comic book character cameos, and I’m looking forward to them.
