Viola Davis has played many roles during her career as an actress. These roles have varied from a housekeeper to a task force agent. But Oscar winner Viola Davis can now add action hero to her resume when she plays General Nanisca in the epic female warrior film The Woman King.
In The Woman King, Davis takes the lead and wages war in the Kingdom of Dahomey during the Franco-Dahomeyan war in the 1800s. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film is based on the true story of the most exceptional African female warriors, the Agojie regiment.
Davis trains the Agojie, who were dubbed by European historians as “Dahomey Amazons” because of their similarity to Amazons of Greek mythology. This historical epic tells the story of the Dahomey Amazons and their fight for survival. After losing many male warriors, General Nanisca trains and prepares the next generation of Agojie, an all-female military regiment, to protect their West African kingdom and freedom from those trying to enslave them.
Watch as Davis reigns supreme with her troop of fearless female warriors who save the kingdom and the freedom of their people. The Woman King is set to hit theaters in September 16 of this year.
