If someone can’t see your true value and real worth, then it is time for a new start. Don’t you agree?
This is why I celebrate Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah Jones and the recent turn of events that shifted her career as a university professor from uncertain to solidified! Let’s talk about how Jones’ story is not unique to women of color.
For me, it was working in TV for years and being paid thousands of dollars less than my colleagues in the same position; winning local & national awards, and continuously being passed over for the top anchor spot and enduring public screaming matches by insecure colleagues whose jobs were never at risk for their behavior. Then, working as a marketing executive I was being lauded for my innovative approach to digital marketing, but was then told to come in and downgrade my office to a cubicle at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic because a more senior male colleague wanted my corner office with the large window. Later, I was told in June of 2020 at the height of uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and no vaccine in sight, “Hey, I know it’s a pandemic, but can you come in and work out of the office in your new cubicle? Masks not required. BTW, not having childcare because everything is shutdown is not an acceptable excuse.” These words were not spoken to me in a private, one-on-one meeting. They were shouted at me in a very public manner, in front of my colleagues, all of whom were male (save for one female administrative assistant there to take notes). These men had no childcare responsibilities in the pandemic and had no empathy for my dilemma.
When is enough, ENOUGH? How poorly does someone have to treat you before you decide to walk away?
You never want to burn bridges, but sometimes other people light the match for you. Am I right, or am I right?
I started Glow Stream TV to level up and power up. I always wanted to create a digital platform for other women executives and business owners to share about their achievements and expertise. I also felt the need to use my skills and experience after having worked in television for more than a decade to help promote the innovative and genius products & services that female entrepreneurs have created—and in a space where they would be celebrated, not (hold your nose!) tolerated. It’s what I have always wanted for myself and what I want for other like-minded women with big goals and high ambitions.
