Are You Growing or Staying the Same?

God Doesn’t Call Us to Stay the Same

Sometimes you hear something that just hits. Today, I heard someone say, “You’re not the same person at 20 that you are at 25.” And they weren’t wrong.

Actually? I’m not even the same person I was two years ago—and guess what? That’s a good thing.

Who I am now is a beautiful combination of all the versions of me that I’ve loved. I’ve kept the parts that served me, that honored God, that helped me grow, and I’ve let go of the rest. That’s what healing looks like. That’s what recovery looks like.

Pruned by God, Not Punished

In John 15:2 (AMP), Jesus says: “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit].”

Whew. That scripture hits hard. God isn’t punishing us when things or people fall away. He’s pruning us, shaping us to bear even more fruit. More purpose. More love. More clarity. I’ve lived that verse in so many ways. I’ve had to cut off parts of me that didn’t serve God’s vision for my life. It wasn’t always easy, but it was necessary.

From 18 to 45: Grace for Every Version of Me

Let me be honest: as a 45 (almost 46) year-old woman, I thank God I didn’t become everything I wanted to be at 18. Because let me tell you, 18-year-old me had no direction. If I had gotten everything I thought I wanted back then, I probably wouldn’t even be alive today.

But I didn’t throw her away completely. I held on to parts of 18-year-old me—the curious parts, the hopeful spirit, the version of me that saw the good in the world and longed to be part of something meaningful. I kept 25-year-old me, the one who believed in kindness and led with empathy. I held on to the part of 30-year-old me that wanted to extend grace to others because she finally understood how much she needed it, too.

But I also had to let go of the pride, the fear, the chaos, the parts of me that weren’t bearing fruit—that’s the pruning.

The Glow Up is Spiritual, Not Superficial

So here’s the real question: Are you growing and evolving, or are you staying the same? Staying the same might feel safe, but in God’s eyes, it’s not fruitful. Growth in faith and recovery requires change, and change takes courage.

Healing is holy. Evolving is part of the assignment. The glow-up isn’t about looking different; it’s about being different. Stronger. Softer. Wiser. More obedient to the call God has on your life

Let God Trim What Doesn’t Serve You

If you’re holding on to old versions of yourself out of guilt, fear, or comfort, I encourage you to pray on it. Ask God to show you what’s no longer serving your purpose. Ask Him to prune you, not to punish you, and to prepare you for more.

Why? Because fruit doesn’t grow unless the tree is trimmed. And the glow-up? That’s what happens when you let God do His work in you.
