Hormones in flux? Here’s how to protect your skin

Medical insights on adult acne triggers and treatment options.Hormones, Acne & Adult Skin in Women of Color

Forget what you’ve heard about adult acne being linked to hygiene. Unless you’ve been out in a barn getting down and dirty or some such, more than likely it’s hormonal, according.

The cause? Androgens are steroid hormones, primarily known as male sex hormones (like testosterone). Everyone has androgens, but women naturally have less and men naturally have more. These hormones in women, when not in balance, can increase oil production, clogging pores and triggering breakouts. A British Journal of Dermatology study shows women of color experience more post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne lesions.

Derm-approved treatments:
• Retinoids
• Azelaic acid
• Spironolactone
• Hormonal birth control

Avoid:
❌ Over-exfoliation
❌ Harsh scrubs
❌ DIY acid trends

✨ Glow Tip: Sunscreen is non-negotiable for dark spot prevention.
