Earlier in my life, I spent a lot of time trying to figure people out. I was confused by some people’s inconsistency or hot & cold manner in which they treated me. Throughout the majority of my adulthood, there has been one person who has always been there for me in a loving and consistent way and that’s my husband.
I met him when I was 22. I don’t have strong family ties due to some unhealthy circumstances in my childhood, so I was just out in the world trying to make a life for myself. He was 26 and comes from a big, tight-knit Catholic family, and he’s never had to fend for himself.
Where I grew up rough and experienced tough love, he grew up gently and experience a nurturing kind of love. For the past 16+ years, he has showered this kind and nurturing type of love upon me. (Sometimes, I don’t know why because I am far from perfect, but I have also learned not to question too much when you have a good thing.)
This experience, along with being a journalist for many years and having to interview people and quickly “read” them, has giving me an acute awareness as to what a healthy relationship is versus what a healthy relationship is not.
